The Winton Fence Chronicles, 2003 to 2005

A collection of videos documenting the research, development and construction of the Musical Fence; glimpses of performances in 2003, 2004 and 2005, and an ABC Landline documentary recorded in 2003.

The Fence Chronicles 1: Resonator Research

Discover the early stages of the Winton Musical Fence project, focusing on the resonator research and experimentation. Graeme Leak explores acoustic solutions inspired by Jon Rose's amplified fences, aiming for a purely acoustic sound despite the harsh outback environment.

The Fence Chronicles 2: The Build

Witness the construction phase of the Winton Musical Fence. Starting with site works in 2003, the video showcases a mix of stills and footage, including David Murphy's Bush Drum Kit installation in 2005, which has delighted thousands of visitors.

The Fence Chronicles 3: Reaction – Interaction

The Winton Musical Fence opened to the public in June 2003, sparking immediate interest from locals. This video captures their first interactions, an Easter concert by locals in 2004, and visitors engaging with the Bush Drum Kit.

ABC Landline Winton fence

In 2003, Pip Courtney, the award-winning rural and regional ABC reporter, covered the story behind the creation of the Winton Musical Fence. Pip captured the essence of this unique project at the time of its creation. The piece is great to revisit now that the Fence is 20 years old.

Concert at the Musical Fence 2004

In 2004, I teamed up with Winton locals to create a twilight concert at the Musical Fence. The evening opened with hymns, featuring a church organ brought to the fence, and closed with a choreographed bowls routine to 'Howzat,' performed by the 'End to End Dance Explosion.'

The Fence Chronicles 4: Rehearsal and Concert

Experience the 'Funky Fence' rehearsal and concert, held on July 15, 2005, as part of the Queensland Music Festival. The video features rehearsal footage with raw camera mic sound and performance clips with a mix of ambient and amplified audio.
