Swan Hill Harmony Band – Community Project for Harmony Day 2025

A unique, large-scale community music-making event celebrating inclusivity and creativity.

What happened?

Over a few weeks in March, we assembled a diverse group of participants who came together to play in a joyful parade on Harmony Day, April 5, 2025. The procession travelled through Riverside Park and arrived at the Sound Shell stage, where we were joined by ukuleles, guitars, a banjo, and the Swan Hill Concert Band to kick off the day’s musical offerings.

How did it work?

Regular playing sessions ran each week. Participants could choose which practice suited them and were free to swap around, so these sessions were usually between 5 and 15 people. We all came together for the final practice in the park on 2 April and then played twice – once at 3pm to begin the musical offerings for Harmony Day, and again at 7pm to conclude the day’s entertainment.

Parallel making sessions involved cleaning up collected junk (gotta love a pressure washer), cutting sticks, making mallets, fixing straps, mobilising bigger drums and creating shakers, rattles and chimes.
