‘Ringing the Changes’ was commissioned by Strange Fruit director Sue Broadway for the Melbourne Festival 2009. It involved swaying performers strapped to 4-meter poles playing a range of beautiful bells mounted atop poles, the superb Federation Bells at Birrarung Marr.
‘The opportunity to write a piece for swaying performers strapped to 4 metre poles who play a range of beautiful bells that also sit on top of poles is about as perfect an opportunity as I could wish for as a composer. It brings together all of the things that interest me about pitch, time and performance, and it presents a very clear picture to an audience of the musical gesture, the upbeat, tempo and pulse.’
