Start Learning Drums Today!

Welcome to my newly opened Kinross Studio!

Personalised one-to-one tuition for all levels, ages 10 and up

I teach children from 10 years old, teens, and adults of all ages how to read music and play the drums.

Whether you’re preparing for an exam, looking to join a band, or just want to play for fun, I can definitely help guide you on your journey. Before moving to Scotland, I was the Percussion Lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and later Head of Performance at La Trobe University in Melbourne. I’ve studied with Australia’s finest teachers and furthered my training in New York, where I took lessons with the legendary Elden C. “Buster” Bailey—widely regarded as one of the greatest snare drummers of all time.

I’m currently accepting new students in Beginning and Intermediate Drum Kit as I establish my studio in our new home of Kinross.

Beginner and Intermediate Drum Kit Lessons

We’ll learn how to hold the sticks correctly, understand pulse, rhythm, and beat, and play in time with a metronome. We’ll build four-way coordination and explore a wide variety of drum beats and grooves.

A solid snare drum technique is essential, so we’ll focus on stick control and mastering the drum rudiments. I encourage the use of play-along tracks, and our lessons will include duets, etudes, and rhythm exercises to build musicality and confidence.

I use Rockschool and Hal Leonard materials, and I also search widely online to find engaging resources to inspire your practice between lessons.

Together, we’ll learn to read music and understand music theory—but most importantly, we’ll have fun as your skills grow. With regular practice, great progress is absolutely within reach.

What to Bring to Your First Lesson
– Your own pair of EAR DEFENDERS*
– A notebook, pencil and eraser
– A manuscript book
– A practice pad (if you have one)
* I am mad about hearing protection. I did a lot of damage to my ears through ignorance of this very important area. Education, and consistent use of protection, is key.

What You’ll Need at Home

Essentials for All Students:

– Practice Pad
– Drumsticks
– Music Stand
– Manuscript Book
– Notebook

For Students Getting Serious:

– Acoustic Drum Kit*
Expect to spend around £300–£500 for a solid beginner kit. You can often find great secondhand deals too.

– Quiet Practice Setup
Add mesh heads and low-volume cymbals to keep sound levels manageable while still working on real drums.

*I recommend acoustic kits over electronic kits. There’s no substitute for playing real drums in a room—it’s how you develop feel, touch, and tone. Electronic kits are great, but learning on a real kit gives you a more musical and rewarding experience.
